Meet Marc in Chicago!

Meet Marc in Chicago!

"Growth happens when you step outside of what is familiar, and living abroad challenges you in the best possible ways."

Why did you choose to go abroad?

I applied for the traineeship program because I am passionate about both professional development and cultural exchange. Having traveled across different countries in Asia, I’ve come to understand how important cultural diversity and adaptability are in shaping who you are and who you can become.

How does the US culture differ from your culture and what has impressed you most so far?

Living in the U.S. feels more advanced and fast-paced compared to my home country. Systems like payment methods, transportation, and even government services are designed for convenience and security through technology. I’ve also been impressed by how warm, welcoming, and open people are—from simple greetings like “hi” and “hello” to asking, “How are you?” I admire how individuals respect each other’s preferences and differences.

Could you take us for a day in your life? What is your routine?

I usually wake up at 6:30 in the morning and start my day with a shower to help me feel refreshed and ready. Back in my home country, every meal included rice, but here I’ve adapted to lighter breakfasts like bagels, sandwiches, or cereal. When I arrive at the office, I grab a cup of coffee—free, by the way—and enjoy some snacks like pretzels (honey mustard is my favorite). I also make it a point to update my family when I arrive at and leave work. My workday can range from “What are we doing today?” to “There’s so much to do,” but I enjoy every bit of it. I’m grateful for the opportunity to communicate directly with clients and learn from our partners.

After work, we either grab something from a fast-food place or cook Filipino dishes at home. Occasionally, we watch a movie or go shopping at places like Macy’s, Dollar Tree, Nordstrom Rack, or Ross as a way to treat ourselves.

How has this experience abroad helped you to grow personally?

This experience has helped me become more independent. As the youngest in my family, I used to rely heavily on my parents and siblings. Living in the U.S. has taught me how to make my own decisions, accept their consequences, and take full responsibility for my actions. Ultimately, I’ve learned that life is meant to be lived fully.

Why would you recommend others to do a program abroad?

I would recommend joining a program abroad because there are so many experiences you might miss if you stay within your comfort zone. Growth happens when you step outside of what is familiar, and living abroad challenges you in the best possible ways.

If you could express your experience in three words, what would these be?

Liberating. Fulfilling. Life-changing.
